Melrose is a superb base both for the sightseer and the sports minded. In and around Melrose there is a wonderful range of abbeys, castles, stately homes and gardens to explore whilst for the lover of outdoor sports there is top class fishing, golf, tennis, cycling, mountain biking and walking. Edinburgh is approximately 35 miles away and the coastal villages of Coldingham and St Abbs approximately 37 miles. Buses to Edinburgh and Berwick run almost hourly.

The Scottish Borders is an area with a turbulent and romantic history reflected in the rich culture of music, arts, drama and dance featured in events throughout the year. Melrose is also the birthplace of the now famous Rugby Sevens and the Melrose Sevens held in April of each year is an event not to be missed by rugby enthusiasts. The celebrated Sir Walter Scott lived most of his life in the Borders, and loved the Melrose area hailing one particular view, so called “Scotts View” just outside Melrose, as the most beautiful in Scotland. He is buried at nearby Dryburgh Abbey and his beautiful family home Abbotsford House – approximately one mile from Melrose is open to the public.

With more than 1500 miles of dedicated walking routes in spectacular countryside including the famous St Cuthberts Way, Southern Upland Way ,and the Border Abbeys Walk– walking here is excellent at any time of year. Local and international anglers are attracted by the unbeatable fishing found in the Scottish Borders. The banks of the majestic Tweed are a short walk from the centre of Melrose.

The proximity of Melrose to Edinburgh also makes it an ideal base for trips to Edinburgh which hosts the spectacular Edinburgh Festival throughout August.
